OK, here's something that many churches deal with. We have 7 (that's right SEVEN) guitar players on our worship team. When they all play together it sounds more like a train rolling down the tracks than it does music. Is there something that we can do to help the sound? Should we sit some people out? Can they really ever sound good together?

Seven is a lot to have at once but you could orchestrate three of four, each playing a specific part. The key is blending not duplicating. Duplicating only clutters up parts. One guitar could play the stock open chords with a light strum, another playing a finger picking pattern higher up the neck in different inversions, another could do a rhythmic muted "chicken pickin'" thing and another could do fills in between the vocal lines. It takes some practice but once done with one song the ideas can be transferred to others. Hope this helps.

Another solution is to start a guitar club where guitarist in your church or even outside the church get together to discuss problems and share ideas. Meeting once a month, this could also be used as a forum to group guitarist together to find who works well together and they can all experiment with playing ideas and not burden a worship team rehearsal. The more things are put in the open the better for everyone. Seven guitarist who want to play on a worship team is a plus in my book.
